Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar has launched its first licensing round, inviting bids for eight blocks offshore the insular semi-autonomous region of Tanzania.
The basin’s evolution dates back to Early-Mid Jurassic which is analogous to the adjacent prolific East African basins.
The licensing round consists of 8 blocks of size between 2,846 km² to 5,666 km² situated within water depths between 500m and 3,000m. The blocks that will be offered under the 1st Licensing Round include Block 1-A, Block 1-B, Block 1-C, Block 1-D, Block 1-E, Block 1-F, Block 1-G, and Block 1-H.
The deadline for bid submission and Licensing Round closure is set for 16th September 2024. Zanzibar invites companies to participate in the Zanzibar 1st Licensing Round by engaging in this process.
A variety of datasets from different vintages are available to license through our exclusive data provider, SLB. The majority of the datasets have been processed through depth migration and has available AVO ready products. The data provides valuable insight into the basin’s potential and support the de-risking of the exploration in a largely under-explored basin.

The region is characterized by a presence of deeper buried mud stones and clay shale as source rocks of Middle Jurassic, upper cretaceous, Paleocene and Eocene epochs; with sequences of limestone, sand and carbonates beds of Eocene and Oligocene as excellent reservoirs and possible cap rock from inter-bedded mudstones and shale sections of upper cretaceous, Paleocene and Eocene origin and possibilities of structural traps generated by faults. These environments are believed to be favorable for the existence of source rocks, reservoirs and seal rocks for potential hydrocarbons occurrence in the area. However, the presence of extensive faults may either be advantageous for development of structural traps or provide migration paths.
